With an estimated 90% of all hospitalized patients receiving IV medications via infusion pumps, IV infusion pump systems are among the most frequently used technologies in healthcare.
Our work is focused on increasing awareness of the most important medication administration safety issues associated with IV smart pumps, including clinical usability and IV medication administration error. Although it is possible to address some of the issues with changes in clinical processes, the most fundamental challenges need to be addressed through innovation and the development of new technologies using a human factors approach.
